Dr. Bickel received his medical degree from the UCLA School of Medicine. He completed his residency in Plastic Surgery at Stanford University Medical Center. He also received specialty training in Microsurgery at The Department of Microsurgery, Transplantation, and Replantation with Dr. Harry Buncke at Davies Medical Center in San Francisco and completed an AO International Fellowship in Hand Surgery with Dr. Ueli Buchler in Bern, Switzerland.
Following residency, Dr. Bickel completed a Fellowship in Hand Surgery at the Raymond Curtis Hand Center in Baltimore, Maryland.
After completing his training, Dr. Bickel was Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery and Orthopaedic Surgery at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He was a founding Co-Director of The Johns Hopkins Hand Service and the Director of Hand Surgery in the Division of Plastic Surgery. While at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Bickel performed the first successful arm and leg replantation surgeries in children in that institution's history. He was active in teaching, lecturing, and research, serving as Director of the Division of Plastic Surgery Research Laboratory in 1996/97.
Currently, Dr. Bickel is Clinical Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery at The University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine. He practices Hand & Upper Extremity Surgery full-time at The Hand Center of San Francisco. |

Dr. Bickel is Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery; he has received a Certificate of Added Qualification in Hand Surgery from the Board. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He maintains membership in the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, American Association of Hand Surgeons, the American Society for Peripheral Nerve, the American Medical Association, the California Medical Association, the California Orthopedic Association, AOA National Medical Honor Society, and AO North America.
Dr. Bickel currently operates at Pacific Heights Surgery Center, California Pacific Medical Center, and St. Mary's Medical Center in San Francisco, where he has been practicing since 1998. Dr. Bickel's practice focuses on treatment of all upper extremity pathology, trauma, and reconstruction, in adults and children.

Dr. Bickel's career has focused on Surgical Reconstruction, Teaching, and Research. He has authored numerous articles, abstracts, and chapters in professional journals and texts. He is currently serving as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Hand Surgery. Dr. Bickel has been involved in resident instruction in the Division of Plastic Surgery at University of California, San Francisco since 1998 and is an Associate Team Physician for the University of San Francisco athletic teams.
A member of numerous professional organizations, Dr. Bickel has served as Faculty at several diverse educational courses, helping to instruct colleagues in the principles and techniques of Hand and Microsurgery. He is a member of the teaching faculty for AO North America, helping to instruct other hand surgeons from around the world in the principles of fracture management in the upper extremities.

| Dr. Bickel has participated in volunteer missions providing Reconstructive Surgery services to the people of many developing nations through his involvement in Interplast and Project DAWN. He has traveled to countries in the Carribean, South America, Central and Southeast Asia to provide free surgery and patient care, and to help to educate the health professionals in underserved and developing areas. | |
In 2005, Dr. Bickel coordinated charitable medical care for a young refugee child from abroad, who received surgical reconstruction on severe traumatic injuries to his wrist, peripheral nerves, and hand through affiliation with The Palestinian Children's Relief Fund. The child was treated in San Francisco and was able to return home after Dr. Bickel performed surgery to repair damaged nerves in the child's wrist, restore tendon function to the fingers and remove scar from about the wrist and forearm.
Dr. Bickel's practice continues to focus on the understanding and treatment of problems related to Injuries, Diseases, and Disorders of the Hand and Upper Extremity, Peripheral Nerves, and Vascular System, as well as Reconstructive Surgery in Adults and Children. He and his staff remain committed to providing the best possible care to every patient at The Hand Center of San Francisco.
